Entrepreneurial and self-sustaining development projects provide jobs and income for individuals to pay for utilities and healthcare. Micro-lending is a viable way to fund small business projects in the community. A micro-lending system was initiated by the Abayudaya women in order to start small businesses. Crafts The women crochet kippot as a source of income. They are in the process of expanding their production and distribution capacity, as well as experimenting with additional items. Guest House The Abayudaya community hosts an increasing number of tourists and volunteers each year. A guest house offers a viable economic development opportunity for the Abayudaya Jews, allowing them to benefit from the expanding tourist industry and capture desperately needed revenue. Other tourist businesses can be developed with micro-loans. Livestock Program Uganda’s high child mortality rate is related to poor nutrition. A dairy program will allow milk to be sold at an affordable cost to provide a consistent source of protein and vitamins to malnourished children and mothers. This meets both the health care and economic sustainability needs of the community. |
